1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 8-B, W-6740. Rarity-2. UNITED STATES, 4 Cinquefoils. MS-64 RB (PCGS).
177.8 grains. Plenty of vivid rose-orange mint color remains to surfaces that also display handsome toning in gently mottled olive-brown iridescence. The strike comes up a bit soft at upper obverse and lower reverse, with original planchet texture evident in the latter area, but the detail is impressively bold elsewhere. Quality is solid Choice Mint State with a hard, satiny texture and no post-production blemishes of note. A few light planchet drift marks along the right obverse border find greatest expression at about 2 o'clock, where they are well concealed within the ends of some of the sun's rays. By Fugio copper standards Newman 8-B is a more available die marriage in Mint State. Most such pieces trace their pedigrees to the Bank of New York Hoard, in which some 246 examples of Newman 8-B resided as late as 1948. A common provenance is where the similarity between this PCGS-certified specimen and most other Mint State examples of the die pair comes to an abrupt end, as most do not retain nearly as much mint red color. This superior-quality and lovely near-Gem belongs in an advanced cabinet.
