FRANCE. Jean Cochet Nickel-Silver Medal, 1875. UNCIRCULATED.
Weight: 66.15 gms; diameter: 51mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Portrait facing left with ecclesiastical collar, L'ABBÉ COCHET, ARCHÉOLOGUE around; Reverse: Many lines of text. Rim: Stamped "Maillechort". Jean Benoît Désiré Cochet (1812-75) was, with Jacques Boucher de Perthes, a pioneering figure and prolific author in the field of medieval French scientific archaeology. He was ordained a priest in 1836 and a decade later was made priest to Saint-Jacques de Dieppe where he remained for the rest of his ecclesiastical career. He also was appointed an inspector of historical monuments for the Department of the Seine-Inférieure in 1849 and later Curator of the Rouen Antiquities Museum. As the reverse of this medal indicates, he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1855. This medal is nowhere recorded as a work by Jules-Clément Chaplain, though sale records exist of bronze examples. This is the first Nickel-Silver example recorded. Chaplain was at a very early stage in his career in 1875, the obverse bears a superb portrait of its subject, and presents every hallmark of the artist's extremely detailed and compelling modeling: from his elaborate hair, to the sensitive folds of and around his ecclesiastical collar, to the wrinkles at the corner of his eye and double chin.
