Maier-65. Weight: 137.25 gms; diameter: 68mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Bust facing left, RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE around; Reverse: Figures with city in background, EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE INTERNATIONALE DE 1878 PARIS around, inscription box engraved with "Boutmy & Co". Chaplain won the commission in a competition with designs by Oudiné, Alphée Dubois, and other leading medalists of the period, winning a prize of 6,000 francs.
