Description

COLOMBIA. Banco Nacional de los Estados Unidos de Colombia. 20 Centavos, 15.3.1885. P-162. DP 420. PMG Very Fine 25.
An incredibly rare small-change note dating back to 1885. Printed in Bogota by Litografia D. Paredes, this 20 Centavos was part of an experiment in which 200,000 10 Centavos notes and 150,000 20 Centavos notes were issued to see how the public would react to the issuance of small-change paper money (there were a handful of earlier small-change notes, but none were as widespread as this 1885 issue). Evidently a success, as a wide variety of lower denomination notes were issued for the next few decades. This series, however, was mostly withdrawn and is seldom seen in the market today. In fact, in our exhaustive auction archive, we have never handled either the 10 Centavos or 20 Centavos of this issue. Stamp of the Banco Nacional and signature of cashier are seen on back. PMG has graded just three notes of this Pick number, with this tied with one other for finest.
From the Gran Colombia Collection.

Estimate: $2500.00- $3500.00
