ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Pius IX/Restoration of the Lateran Altar Bronze Medal, 1851. Rome Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
Mazio-693. By N. Cerbara & I. Bianchi. Diameter: 82mm; Weight: 279.50 gms. Obverse: Bust left, wearing zucchetto, mantum, and decorative pallium; all within outer border of banded oak leaves; Reverse: Interior view of the Basilica Santi Battista ed Evangelista in Laterano, focused upon the Papal Altar in gothic style. Edge : Plain. Rich brown surfaces, with exceptional brilliance. An incredibly impressive and imposing type. Given its large format status, EXTREMELY RARE in this advanced state of preservation, with no scuffs, distracting marks, or bruising. The Archbasilica of Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista (Sts. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist) in Laterano is the highest-ranking church in Rome, the oldest public church in Rome, and it is the oldest basilica in the West, even rising to the ranks of archbasilica. Housed within it is the much-celebrated papal altar, which Pius IX commissioned to be restored in 1851. The altar itself is one of the most celebrated in all of Rome, as it is believed that it once contained the Ark of the Covenant in the 12th century. Further, the original wooden table upon which the first popes performed liturgical functions (and possibly even where St. Peter held mass) is contained within the high altar. In addition to the refurbishments commissioned by Pius IX, some expansions were made as well. Many of these intricate additions can be seen on this powerful medal from the hand of Bianchi. Zooming in reveals countless intricacies that were faithfully translated into medallic form, making this piece an unbelievable work of art.
