FRANCE. Consulate. Brass Medallic Trial, Year 8 (1799/1800). Paris Mint. Napoléon as First Consul. PCGS SPECIMEN-45.
cf. Maz-581-8a/614b (for obv./rev.); cf. Ciani-527bis (bell metal). Edge crudely striated in part. By L. Jaley & P. Gengembre. Diameter: 29.7mm; Weight: 11.24 gms. A rather interesting and no doubt EXTREMELY RARE trial that does not convey a denomination, this specimen features an irregular planchet that does display some scattered issues. Nevertheless, exceptionally intriguing, and one that pairs Jaley's portrait of the First Consul with that of Gengembre's method of striking reverse.
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Schulman on 15 October 1971). Ex: Hans Schulman (10/1971) Lot # 1571.
