Boldly Struck Near-Gem Cob 8 Escudos
MEXICO. Cob 8 Escudos, 1715-Mo J. Mexico City Mint. Philip V. PCGS MS-64.
Fr-6; KM-57.2; Cal-2214. Tied for second finest certified of the date with two other examples on either the NGC or PCGS population reports, only one finer (NGC MS-65). This remarkable near-Gem survivor offers a wholly extravagant appearance on a nearly round flan, it displays sharply struck virtually complete legends and devices, with a particular boldness noted upon the various facets of the complex coat-or-arms, denomination, mintmark and assayer letter. VERY RARE in such an high state of preservation generating tremendous eye appeal and desirability. Upon close inspection there appears to be slight doubling on both the obverse and reverse. In fact, this is minor evidence of being a flip over double strike mint error. Various features are noticed in the open fields of the reverse such as the pearls on the base of the crown that can be seen at 5 o'clock. While other aspects are not as clear and somewhat obscured due to the cross and other design elements being struck over them. We note that a similar example graded NGC MS-63 without a visible date was sold in our January NYINC 2022 auction of the Pat Johnson collection lot # 2058 which hammered for $22,000.
