1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 2-A.4, W-2310. Rarity-5. Mailed Bust Right. VF-20 (PCGS).
138.4 grains. A second Roman Head, this example is the marginally scarcer second die pairing for this distinctive obverse type. Light steely brown with subtle tan mottling on both sides. Beautifully centered, and struck on a flan of good quality and weight at the upper end of the range given by Randy Clark in The Identification and Classification of Connecticut Coppers. The higher relief portrait stands out nicely, but related shallowness in the central reverse exhibits natural planchet texture. A tiny rim mark and a couple of old thin scratches are noted, but the centering is superb, and the legends are respectably clear throughout. This was the primary Ford coin.
PCGS# 685150.
