1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 9-E, W-2855. Rarity-5+. Mailed Bust Left. EF Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).
137.2 grains. Evenly granular dull olive brown with somewhat more mahogany patina on the higher points of the design. The obverse is sharply misaligned toward 12 o'clock, compromising the top of the effigy's head and the uppermost letters flanking it. In opposition a broad, thick rim is seen, with complete dentils and what appears to be a secondary set of dentils on a thin flange at the rim. These are spaced differently than the broader sawtooth dentils of the 9-E, suggestive of an overstrike of some type. Dies rotated 90 degrees, causing weakness in the right legend of the reverse as it is in opposition to the unstruck area of the obverse. Other details are reasonably clear.
PCGS# 687261.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) Henry Leon Sale, May 2007, lot 428.
