Description

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 14-H, W-2895. Rarity-3. Mailed Bust Left, Arrows at Date. Overstruck on a 1766 Irish Halfpenny. VG Details--Rim Damage (PCGS).
128.7 grains. Fairly smooth olive brown with one slightly lighter brown area behind the effigy's head, and a darker brown area in the upper left quadrant of the reverse. Fairly hard surfaces with only a trace of microporosity. A series of notches around the reverse seem to have been present in the flan prior to striking and might relate to a partial filing of the 1766 Irish halfpenny undertype. Traces of this undertype are sharpest beneath the bust on the obverse, where the distinctive 66 of the date is easily seen adjacent to the base of the harp. Struck a little unevenly and slightly off center, but with most design features clear, including the date.
PCGS# 686370.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our sale of November 2017, lot 4082.
