Forming part of Chaplain's popular series of French worthies, this medal celebrates the life and career of the physicist and mathematician André-Marie Ampère, a pioneer in the study of electromagnetism, and inventor of the solenoid and electrical telegraph. The SI unit of measurement of electric current, the Ampere, is named after him. The reverse of this medal refers to Ampère's membership in the French Academy of Sciences, and his Professorships at the École Polytechnique and Collège de France.
