Stockton, California. $10 1882 Value Back. Fr. 577. First NB. Charter #2412. PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
Spawned by the expiration of the Aldrich-Vreeland Act in 1915, a Value Back like this one is scarce sight owing to the limited context of their issue and circulation. Relatively few examples are recorded for the likes of California with less than 200 examples recorded for the entire state that are mostly from the likes of Los Angeles and San Francisco. For the First National Bank of Stockton (Charter# 2412) Value Backs account for just two notes out of an overall population of 48 notes recorded by the National Bank Note Census. This example is no doubt rare, but a survivor as well. Upon a quick glance one could rightly assume this note to be an About Uncirculated example that has seen minimal circulation. Yet the level of eye appeal and originality endemic to this example is nothing short of remarkable and is sure to call out to a quality-focused collector preoccupied with the uncommon or the California specialist looking to build a truly great collection. Noted for "Exceptional Paper Quality" by PMG. This note is pictured in Paper Dreams in the Golden State on page 18.
