Description

Ukiah, California. $20 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1802-1. First NB. Charter #10977. PMG Very Fine 20.
Located in Mendocino County and well to the north of San Francisco; Ukiah stands among the ranks of small one-bank towns that dot the rural expanses of Northern California. Once part of the Rancho Yokaya land grant given to Cayetano Juárez in 1845, the area takes its name from the Pomo village (band) of Yokáya, and roughly translates to "deep valley" or "south valley." A settlement would spring up following the American acquisition of California and an anglicized version of the name was adopted by settlers who came to the area. Known as "Ukiah" from that point onwards; the town was isolated for much of its early history and even past incorporation in 1876 as it would not be until 1889 that the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad completed a line from Cloverdale to Ukiah. By the early decades of the Twentieth Century Ukiah had seen considerable growth and by 1917 the First national Bank of Ukiah (Charter# 10977) was organized and succeeded an earlier state-chartered operation. Leading a fairly successful albeit undistinguished life, the First National Bank would come to issue a total of $509,960 in National Currency by the time the bank's assets were bought and liquidated by the Savings Bank of Mendocino County in September 1931. A total of 21 pieces are recorded for this institution by the National Bank Note Census with this piece represented one of only five small size notes recorded by the NBNC and the first to be offered since 2018.
From the Eric Agnew Collection Part II.

Estimate: $1000.00 - $1500.00
