INDIA. Mysore. Fanam, ND (1638-62). Kanthirava Narasaraja I. NGC MS-64.
Fr-1338. Obverse: Vishnu facing seated; Reverse: Sri Kamthirava. Well struck with a nicely centered obverse and satiny luster throughout. As with the previous Maharaja's before him, Kanthirava Narasaraja I continued to expand his territories, laying claim to Satyamangalam in the south, Piriyapatna in the west and Hosur in the north. He was also called to defend against invasion from the Adil Shahis of Bijapur who suffered heavy losses. Culturally, he was the first Wodeyar of Mysore to create symbols associated with royalty, establish mints, and issue coins named "Kanthiray" after him which remained in circulation as part of Mysore's "current national money" for more than a century.
