BURJI MAMLUK: Barsbay, 1422-1438, AV ashrafi (3.40g) (al-Qahira), AH (8)41, A-998, EF, ex Gamal Amer Collection. The ashrafi was introduced as the reform gold coinage by Barsbay, and drew its name from the kunya of al-Ashraf Barsbay. Unlike the failed gold coin reforms by Faraj and Shaykh, Barsbay's reform, introduced in AH829, was successful, maintained by all later Mamluk rulers, then transferred to the Ottoman, who maintained it until the early 19th century. The term ashrafi as "asarfi" is still used for the gold coinage of Nepal in the 21st century!
