Description

INDIA: LOT of 290 coins, including AR 2 annas 1911(c) with the so-called "pig"-style elephant (Fine), and 37 pre-decimal coins from 1950-56 (1 rupee, 6 half rupees, 7 quarter rupees, 3 two annas, 3 annas, 6 half annas, and 12 pice), and 252 decimal coins after 1956, including an AR 10 rupees 1972 (25th Anniversary of the Republic); average circulated grades with some better examples, all identified on accompanying paper flips; retail value $750, lot of 290 pieces. On the "pig"-style 2 annas, the king appears wearing the chain of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire. Because of poor engraving, the elephant looked very much like a pig. The Muslim population was enraged and the image had to be quickly redesigned.
Estimate: USD 180 - 240
