This medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of departure of the Continental Army from Valley Forge on June 19, 1778. It was authorized by the 45th Congress in 1878, designed and engraved by William Barber, and was struck originally in 1880 at the Philadelphia Mint with a reported mintage of only 63 struck. One of the more rare US silver mint medals of the 19th century.
