The Battle of Lake Erie, also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay, was fought on September 10, 1813, on Lake Erie off the shore of Ohio during the War of 1812. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian confederation of Tecumseh. It was one of the biggest naval battles of the War of 1812. Moritz (Fuerst) Fürst (1782–1840), was an early U.S. medalist. Fürst was born near Pressburg (Bratislava) of Jewish-Slovak origin, and after immigrating to the United States in 1807, he worked as an engraver for the United States Mint in Philadelphia from 1812 to 1839. He received quick recognition for his patriotic commemoratives and portraits. This medal was struck officially from original dies circa 1817.
