Description

DENMARK: Christian X, 1912-1947, AR medal (42.58g), 1931, 43mm silver medal for the Bicentennial of Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring; GUDS OEYES WAGT ER WERKETS MAGT around the coat of arms of the city of Copenhagen // crowned three-parted shield with arms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, firefighting implements below, BC twice in circles above dates 1731 - 1931, matte finish as made, in original shell case of issue, UNC. The Copenhagen Fire of 1728 devoured around 28% of the buildings in Copenhagen. The merchants Hans Henrik Bech and Hans Hansen Berg proposed a fire insurance scheme and Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring was founded by royal resolution on January 26, 1731. The fire insurance was instrumental in speeding up the rebuilding of the city since lending money for construction projects became less risky. The first building was insured on December 21, 1731 by Otto Blome at Amagertorv 4. Kjøbenhavns Brandforsikring was originally only active in the market for fire insurance of buildings located inside the City Walls, but from 1889 it gradually opened up for fire insurance on buildings in Frederiksberg and a number of surrounding districts.
