UMAYYAD: 'Abd al-Malik, 685-705, AR dirham (2.23g), Fîl, AH79, A-126, Klat-514, repaired twice along the rims, weight reduced, likely by burial in acidic soil, VF, RR. Walker & others have interpreted the mint as Fîl near Khwarizm, but that city was not yet conquered by the Muslims. An alternative reading is Qibâl, which was the contemporary name of a suburb of Isfahan (without the alif, which was then often omitted from eastern mints, such as Hamadân & Dârâbjird). In Arabic "fîl" means "elephant", and that could have been assigned to just about anywhere along the trade routes to Sind and India, of which some passed through Isfahan.
