Victoria (1837-1901). Penny, 1847, Medusa type pattern, no colon after REG. (BMC-, S.3948). Edge knock on reverse otherwise Very Fine. Extremely rare with very few examples known.
The ‘Medusa’ type has distinct differences from the standard type penny such as no colon after REG, a distinctly different shield and four raised lines protruding from the petals on the reverse. It is so called because of the apparent appearance of Medusa’s head within the chainmail on Victoria’s chest.
