Description

Roman Bow and Plate Brooch Group 2nd century A.D. A mixed group of bronze brooches comprising: a bow brooch with hinged pin, lozengiform bow with enamelled panels, owl to the footplate, possibly a Hod Hill type or derivative; an openwork plate brooch of a horse and rider with sprung pin and scrolled catch to the reverse; an ellipsoid plate brooch with rolled rim and pelleted face, inset crystal cabochon. Cf. Hattatt, R., Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, Oxford, 1989, items 1179, 1552, 1648. 36 grams total, 29-46 mm (1 1/8 - 1 7/8 in.). Acquired 1970s-1980s. Ex UK collection.
