Description

Western Asiatic Crescentic Knife Late 3rd millennium B.C. A tanged copper-alloy knife with shallow crescentic blade. Cf. Gernez, G., L’armament en métal au Proche et Moyen-Orient: des origines a 1750 av. J.C., Paris, 2007, fig.2.126, subtype C2.A, for the type. 57 grams, 26.5 cm (10 1/2 in.). Acquired before 1972. Formerly with a central London gallery. Property of a London gentleman. This is a typical Levantine knife type, found in Byblos, Tell el Dab’a, Megiddo, Moza, Ginosar, Yftah'el, Gibeon and many other localities. They appear in the middle or at the end of Middle Bronze Age I, and are commonly used during the Middle Bronze Age II. In many cases, the context of their discovery is mainly funerary, but the duration of use of the graves is chronologically very long: it often covers the entire Middle Bronze Age, and continues sometimes in the Late Bronze Age.
