Roman Magical Gemstone in Gold Ring
1st century A.D. A carnelian cloison gemstone engraved with two opposed scorpions, two flies and four starbursts, set into a later hollow-formed gold finger ring with ellipsoid bezel. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 189, for type. 4.82 grams, 27.70 mm overall, 18.12 mm internal diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16) (1 in.).
